Tekkhean Lee visited Hong Kong in the summer of 2019. Since then, he has presented his observations in woodblock printing. In the 1930s, Lu Xun initiated the Modern Woodcut Movement and proposed to use woodblock printing to awaken the national consciousness of Chinese people and express empathy towards their suffering. When compared with other art mediums, woodblock printing was considered a quick and convenient way to circulate social critique. Deeply inspired by the history of woodblock printing, Lee carved bold lines with strong contrasts of light and dark. As white terror descends upon our city, a consensus was reached between the organiser and the artist to replace the original prints with blank hand-made papers. These blank papers embody an ineffable heaviness.
