Clean freshwater is an essential ingredient for a healthy human life, but 1.1 billion people lack access to water and 2.7 billion experience water scarcity at least one month a year. By 2025, two-thirds of the world’s population may be facing water shortages. Water is the foundation of life. But still today, all around the world, far too many people spend their entire day searching for it. When waters run dry, people can’t get enough to drink, wash, or feed crops, and economic decline may occur. In addition, inadequate sanitation—a problem for 2.4 billion people—can lead to deadly diarrheal diseases, like cholera and typhoid fever, and other water-borne illnesses. The problem of water scarcity is a growing one. As more people put ever-increasing demands on limited supplies, the cost and effort to build or even maintain access to water will increase. And water's importance to political and social stability will only grow with the crisis. With access to only one-third of the world’s fresh water, it is important for everyone to be mindful of water use. My goal is to help raise awareness for an issue that affects millions of people every day. This is more than a developing-world problem. Water scarcity is a primary issue that we all face today, and must all support the solutions designed to address and eradicate it. I believe that it is imperative that we individually become aware and conscious of our water use. The knowledge of a problem offers us the power to find a solution for it.
