Named after Karl Herwarth von Bittenfeld, Prussian Field Marshal General, responsible for defense measures of a possible French invasion during the Franco-German war. The neighboring streets Goebenstrasse, Spichernstrasse, Werderstrasse and Bismarckstrasse also got their name with regard to the war.
