The meticulous study of Giotto’s painting methodology which Nikola Marković carries out as a starting point for his large format paintings is indicative of such an atemporatl approach. Marković is not interested in the culturo-historical nor the stylistic specificity of Giotto’s painting. Through a careful analysis of Giotto’s approach to building the space of the painting, he seeks to expose a specific way of thinking about painting which is both modern and classical at the same time, which anticipates linear perspective and retains the flatness of the painted space, which bases the narrative of the composition on a discrete dramatisation of a statically organized mise-en-scène. In other words, Nikola Marković in Giotto’s frescos from the Scrovegni Chapel recognizes those aspects of the painterly approach which bring face to face the seemingly mutually exclusive means and techniques of composing the space of the painting and are located outside its historical coordinates. Embarking from this point, Marković further supplements and elaborates his painting method: he translates the decoded principles of the composing of the painting which he „learned “ from Giotto into spatial structures on which he executes a monumental genre scene whose repertoire he develops using the logic of collage, contrasting various details from scenes of contemporary everyday life. * Ana Eres X Vitamin Contact: xvitamingallery@gmail.com
