La Baronessa Rukavina

Oil on canvas

53 x 64 cm

The portrait of Baroness Rukavina is considered one of the most elegant of Bukovac’s paintings created during his time in Zagreb (1893-1898). Although it stands out from other works he produced during this phase with its simplified chromatic scale and lighter secessionist atmosphere, this portrait of the noble young Baroness is especially defined by the artistic portrayal of the female character itself, as well as the pictorial value of the bloomed vermilion peonies in a cobalt vase, all of which connects this portrait, in the general impression it leaves, with similar works produced by Manet at the beginning of his career.
