Despite his poor health and the strong influence of bad criticism of his last exhibition in Prague held at the end of 1921, Bukovac still came to Belgrade at the start of 1922 so as to settle matters regarding his relocation to his homeland, as well as make a portrait of King Alexander I. This was the fourth time the artist had come to Belgrade in order to portray a Serbian monarch on canvas. Marko Car, with whom he made final changes to the manuscript for his autobiography, heartily complimented Bukovac’s portrait of the King in the press. This portrait was, in fact, the artist’s second to last work as he died of a stroke soon after leaving Belgrade on April 23, 1922, in Prague.
