Artemis in hunt

Painting depicts central nude, male figure with an axe in the woods. However, name "Artemis in hunt" indicates certain ambivalences suggesting either the transformation of the Goddess into a male figure, or the male figure being the prey hunted by the Goddess(audience). The only reference to Artemis(who was the part of tripple deity in matriarchal Greece) is the woods and axe, as a possible hunting weapon. The painting is based on a myth of Artemis and Actaeon, where Actaeon was killed by Artemis and her fellow nymphs. The myth possibly depicts rituals dated to tribal, matriarchal Greece.
