Reconstruction of the Roman city

In the second century BC, new walls surrounded the city, the sanctuaries were reformed and a larger public centre was built, connected to the new port facilities on the coast that had sufficient space and draught for large commercial ships. At the beginning of the imperial era, the ancient Greek nucleus became integrated within the same enclosure as the new Roman city, becoming part of a plural urban reality, the municipium Emporiae.
