Emporion was the first mint to issue coins on the Iberian Peninsula. The first issues of fractional silver coins began at the end of the 6th century BC and they would be used both for the commercial activity and for everyday payments in the life of the city. From the 3rd century BC onwards, drachmas were issued, which adopted types that became symbols of the city, with the legend ΕΜΠΟΡΙΤΟΝ ("of the Emporitans"). Photo: J. Curto / MAC Archive
