I saw a picture of Red Studio by Matisse in 2007, and within days drove to New York and to MOMA to see it in person. The work had such an impact on me, that I began studying modern and contemporary art with any free time I had. Although I’ll always credit Matisse with igniting my passion, these days I’m drawn to Miro, Twombly, Basquiat (who isn’t), and Mark Bradford, who I really admire and suggest checking out , among many others. Aesthetics, and what I suppose is considered beauty in art, is really of little concern to me when I’m creating. How color and form work together is far more interesting. I’m certainly aware that on one level the goal is to entice viewership , but I try to do that in my own way. It’s in this space where I feel comfortable referring to myself as an artist. I feel an artist seeks two things. First, a reaction from themselves. Later, from anyone the artist has the courage to show. Creating art is creating a connection. Inviting conversation. Reminding each other that what we share is our humanity and a desire to grasp in some way why we’re all here.
