Serbia

Marina Abramović, born on November 30, 1946, is a renowned Serbian conceptual and performance artist, celebrated for her pioneering work in body art and endurance art. Over her four-decade career, she has explored the dynamic relationship between performer and audience, the physical and mental limitations of the body, and the transformative power of pain and endurance. Abramović, who refers to herself as the "grandmother of performance art," has significantly influenced the realm of performance art by integrating observer participation and challenging conventional notions of identity. In 2007, she established the Marina Abramović Institute (MAI), a non-profit foundation dedicated to supporting the ongoing practice of performance art.
