Christian Marclay

United States

Christian Marclay (born January 11, 1955) is a visual artist and composer with dual American and Swiss nationality. His work explores the connections between sound, noise, photography, video, and film. Marclay is a pioneer in using gramophone records and turntables as musical instruments to create sound collages. According to critic Thom Jurek, he may be the "unwitting inventor of turntablism." Marclay's use of turntables and records began in the late 1970s, developing independently but parallel to hip hop's use of the instrument.
